Sergeant's Exam
Scheduled for April 13
Saturday January 5, 2013  9:26 a.m.

The State of New Jersey Civil Service Commission has announced that the promotional exam for the rank of sergeant is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, 2013.  They also point out that the date is subject to change.

Below is the actual text from the Civil Service Commission website:

1/4/2013 Update: The Police Sergeant promotional examination is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 13, 2013. However, this examination date may change. The examination date, time and location will be confirmed when candidate examination notices are mailed two to three weeks prior to the examination date.

A sergeant's exam orientation guide will be posted on the Civil Service Commission website by February 1, 2013.

The test has been on hold since 2010 when the United States Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against New Jersey and the Civil Service Commission, "alleging a pattern or practice of employment discrimination against African-Americans and Hispanics, in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964."  (Read our 2010 editorial on this suit)

The orientation guide is of just as much interest as the test itself as officers and observers alike are curious as to what changes have been made to the format of the exam.

The previous format consisted of an exam containing anywhere from sixty to one hundred questions.  An announcement for the exam came out several months prior and included a list of books from which the questions were taken.  The areas tested on included traffic law, criminal law, case law, New Jersey Attorney General Guidelines, management and supervision, and other relevant areas.

Note: will be adding a special section on preparing for the promotional exam.  There will be practice questions, information on 2C, the Attorney General's Guidelines, etc.
