The State of New
Jersey Civil Service Commission has announced that the promotional exam
for the rank of sergeant is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, 2013. They
also point out that the date is subject to change.

The Police Sergeant promotional examination is tentatively scheduled for
Saturday, April 13, 2013. However, this examination date may change. The
examination date, time and location will be confirmed when candidate
examination notices are mailed two to three weeks prior to the

by February 1, 2013.
The test has been
on hold since 2010 when the United States Department of Justice
filed a lawsuit against New Jersey and the Civil Service Commission,
"alleging a pattern or practice of employment discrimination against
African-Americans and Hispanics, in violation of Title VII of the Civil
Rights Act of 1964." (Read

guide is of just as much interest as the test itself as officers and
observers alike are curious as to what changes have been made to the
format of the exam.
format consisted of an exam containing
anywhere from sixty to one hundred questions. An announcement for the
exam came out several months prior and included a list of books from
which the questions were taken. The areas tested on included traffic
law, criminal law, case law, New Jersey Attorney General Guidelines,
management and supervision, and other relevant areas.
