(NJLawman.com) As
the final preparations for police week were being made, a brave
officer with the Lakewood Police Department lost his life.
Patrolman William
Preslar, a 2001 graduate of the Ocean County Police Academy, was
pronounced dead following a one-vehicle collision on Route 528 at
about 4:00 a.m. this morning.
The 36-year-old
six-year veteran was also a volunteer firefighter with the Lakewood
Fire Department.
So far, the
investigation has determined that while responding to back up a
fellow officer, a deer ran out in front of Officer Preslar's vehicle
causing the crash.
Off duty Lakewood
officers as well as officers from other jurisdictions have been in
and out of the Lakewood headquarters all day.
Officer Preslar's
wife Lisa has expectedly been surrounded by Lakewood officers and
has already received calls from New Jersey State Governor Jon
Corzine and State Police Superintendent Rick Fuentes. William
Preslar also leaves behind two little girls ages four and five.
Located at the
northern tip of Ocean County, Lakewood is a very busy town patrolled
by a PD with about 110 officers.
William is the
second Lakewood officer to die in the line of duty. The first
was
Patrolman Hartley F. Richter who was also killed in a motor
vehicle accident while trying to stop a car back in 1947.
Our hearts go out
to the family and colleagues of Officer William Preslar.
