On Thursday, April 17, 2003 shots rang
out on a church lawn in suburban Fair Lawn, New Jersey. The
aftermath of these shots left a Clifton, New Jersey Police Officer
wounded and a female Fair Lawn Police Officer dead.
That night would forever change the
lives of officers and citizens alike in this community. Officer Mary
Ann Collura, an 18 year veteran of the force, was beloved by many in
the community and throughout the state. Her impact is still felt
today as she has been remembered in many different venues including
the formation of a Memorial Scholarship Foundation which has awarded
over $13,000.00 in scholarships since her passing.
On Saturday, April 15, 2006 at 3:00
p.m. the brother and sister officers of Fair Lawn Police Officer
Mary Ann Collura will honor her once again with a bronze statue
which will be unveiled in front of our Municipal Building. This
statue has been three years in the making and is the only statue of
a female Police Officer who was shot and killed in our nation today.
The statue is of Mary Ann kneeling and
speaking with two children. In 1999, Mary Ann came up with the idea
of providing children with glowsticks at Halloween. She felt that if
children could be better seen by motorists, there would be less
chance of them being struck by vehicles. Her idea has spread to our
entire county and over 60,000 glowsticks were distributed this past
year in her memory. The statue has her presenting two children
dressed for Halloween with glowsticks. The little boy is dressed
like a firefighter and the little girl like a police officer.
As people pass our municipal building
they will forever remember this great police officer and her love
and dedication to the residents of our community, state and nation.
We would like to invite your members to attend our dedication
ceremony on Saturday, April 15, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. (8-01 Fair Lawn
Avenue, Fair Lawn, NJ 07410). As always, thank you for your
tremendous support of Law Enforcement Officers.
